In the world of Fairy Tail, there are many different types of mages, several of which are the focus of events or characters, in the story. Each variety of mages, has their own special ability, and style, and depending on circumstances they can either be very strong, or very weak. This thread will help you differentiate between each type of mages, with a brief summary, pros and cons, known users from the series, and potential skills or powers. Depending on their class, a mage can have a certain number of skills. Any mage, not specifically mapped out, in this thread, can have up to 3 skills. Number of Techniques, by Class:Dragon Slayer: 3 Techniques Ex-Quip: 4 Transformations Ice Make: 3 Techniques Water Magic: 3 Techniques Stellar Spirit: 5 Keys: 3 Silver, 2 Gold NOTE: For more information, on anything related to the series, especially the following classes or classes NOT discussed here, go to the Fairy Tail Wikia. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND! Those listed classes are just good examples and it would be better if you were to be creative and use something new, especially when some of those are, if you are familiar with Fairy Tail, quite rare classes. Seeing dozens of Ex-Quip, when Erza is quite the only one would be very unsightly. Furthermore do techniques have to follow a principle. When you wish to be a Water Mage, than use water magic and water magic alone. Fights are important in Fairy Tail and so techniques as well. If all of the techniques are extremely powerful is this causing a problem. Keep this in mind.

Dragon Slayer Summary A specialized form of magic which the series suggests can only be learned from the dragons themselves. Dragon Slayer allows the user, to a certain degree, to merge with a specific element. This means that their body's composition transforms to suit the new element. As a result of this, those with Dragon Slayer abilities are able to change their body to their own element, in both offensive and defensive styles.
They can also consume external sources of their natural element to replenish themselves, although it has been demonstrated that certain foreign substances will substantially increase their power. About 10 years ago, all dragons disappeared from human eyes, for unknown reasons, and have yet to be seen since.
It should be noted that only one dragon has one child that it taught it's Dragon Slayer magic to. This is known as the Old-Style Dragon-Slayers. For the sake of clarity, they will be referred to as 'Old', in this thread.
Dragon Slayers can be made, through artificial means. It is somehow implanted via Lachryma Crystals. The exact way is currently unknown. Luxus and Cobra are two examples and refer to their ability as New Generation Dragon-Slayers. For the sake of clarity, they will be referred to as 'Neo', in this thread.
Third Generation Dragon-Slayers are hybrids, only having killed their dragon parent, instead of learning from them. They are also infused with Dragon Lachryma and have instant access to Dragon Force (though a weaker variant of it)
Interesting to note, all Dragon-parent types (First and Third Generations) have an Exceed.
Pros: - A broad range of elemental choices - A variety of powers, with said element - Able to consume their element or other magical substances, to boost their own power
Cons: - Can over consume or eat something poisonous - Can only be taught by dragons and there is only one of each dragon, in existence
Known Dragons/Element: Igneel/Fire Metalicana/Metal Grandine/Sky Lachryma/Poison Lachryma/Lightning Skiadrum/Lachryma/Shadow Weisslogia/Lachryma/Light
Known Dragon Slayers: First-Generation Slayers Natsu Dragonil Gajeel Redfox Wendy Marvell
Second-Generation Slayers Cobra Luxus Dreyar
Third-Generation Slayers Sting Eucliffe Rogue Cheney
Other Elements: Earth Ice Water Wind Wood

Ex-QuipSummaryThe power to change and equip an object. Series ExampleErza uses Ex-quip, a type of magic that swaps weapons and armor at will. Her certain Ex-quip is called, "The Knight." She is noted for her ability to exquip quickly and is the only sword mage capable of exquipping armor while fighting, earning her the nickname "Erza the Titania", and is well known in the continent, not only in the city of Magnolia. Her strength is so great that even strong mages such as Natsu and Gray fear her; this fear immediately ceases their bickering in her presence. Pros:- A very broad amount of weapons and choices - A very rare and powerful magic that few can used - Able to adjust to a variety of situations Cons:- Very hard to control; Nearly impossible to master Known Ex-Quipers:Erza ScarletRaine Fleur

Ice Make Summary A form of alchemy, using Ice*. This magic can either be Static (unmoving) or Dynamic (moving), depending on personal preference.
* denotes that it is only known to be Ice, and that no other element is confirmed or denied. Due to the nature of this, the site will allow the 14 elements, mentioned in the Dragon Slayer mage style, to be used.
Series Example A form of alchemy magic that creates shapes or objects out of ice. In Gray's case, he uses Static ice magic, meaning he can shape his ice into weapons or attacks. Gray is incredibly skilled at this, as he was commented by the Magic Council for creating objects quickly and effortlessly during the battle with Zeref's demon. Gray's skill in Ice Make is skillful enough to completely freeze Lluvia when she was in a state of boiling water.
Pros: - A pretty basic set of skills - Basically an easier form of Dragon Slayer magic
Cons: - Can be combated rather easily
Known Ice Make Mages: Gray Fullbuster Ur (deceased) Leon Reitei

Other Information
1) Other types of mages are allowed, either those from the series, who aren't outlined here, or create your own. Try to make it as balanced as possible.
For Ex-Quipers 2) Even though the rules say, you are allowed four Transformations, the first is your basic equipment, that you always wear. This means you have three EXTRA transformations to work with, along with your basic equipment.
For Stellar Spirit Mages 3) Even though the series states, that there are only 12 golden keys, this rule is going to be ignored, to keep the site more free form and allow for more options. Gold keys are still rare, but you CAN start off with two.
4) Even though the rules state you can have 3 Silver and 2 Gold, you can have up to 5 Silver Keys, or 4 Silver and 1 Gold. The only combination, that doesn't work at the start, is more than 2 Gold Keys.
For Dragon Slayers 5) Due to the unknown circumstances of Dragons, based on what the series has explained, we are to assume there is only one of each type of dragon. Due to this, we're not allowing ANY repeats of canon character skills (as of the creation of this site). This means, that there can be no Sky, Metal, or Fire Dragon Slayer mages. The other 6 elements will be allowed, until taken by created characters.
This rule will be strictly enforced!

Less of a rule, than some help. You do need to think a bit different from magic, when taking a Fairy Tail Mage into consideration. They are more like special power users, than people who wield a great palette of different spells.
If you are familiar with another popular series, like One Piece, might you have a great example, of what FT chars can do. There are some older or powerful people who have more abilities, but in general will only one kind be allowed.
Skills that have been seen so far, to make one not per accident just copy off, already used magetypes. (Without taking account its complete status, nor that all spells will be written out with their correct names):
Healing, Poison, Heart(Mind)reading, Ability Absorb, Shapeshifting, Keys, Magical Weapons, Bullet Improve (as in rapid fire, sniping abilities), Ice, Fire, Water, Card-enhancement, Demon Transformation, Shadows, Wind Control, Putting people into cards, Slowing Down Targets, Puppet Mastery, Lightning, Turning people into stone, forcing people to fight under special rules, turn people into succubus, walking through walls, etc.
The list already suggests that you can be quite creative, as well as chaotic, when coming up with your character. Chaotic is fine... overpowered is not. Even if that is difficult to say, when facing off against some characters, yet do I hope everyone can understand that we cannot do much with hopelessly overpowered characters or in general will have to reduce the activity of powerful characters. It just makes no sense to have strong people in missions, meant for rookies and that is what most of the people might be, in the beginning.
1.) Healing is a very rare magic, that is supposed to have died out, which means that only the canon character Wendy has it, as of yet.
2.) Ex-quip IF IT IS DONE FAST AND CONCERNS THE ENTIRE EQUIPMENT is a fairly unique style as well, and as known only used by Erza (or Elza in the official written form by the mangaka). Nonetheless... the use of separate space, generally known as ex-quip on the other hand is more widely used and another FT member is Biska, who can change her guns (relatively) fast, yet nowhere at Erza's level. Take this into consideration and make sure to only have one kind of weapon. Either you exquip swords or you exquip bows or guns, but not switching between weapon systems etc and the 'items' you have in the begin should also be fairly weak.
3.) Shapeshifting can cause a lot of problems and is usually used by powerful mages, who can use more than just one kind of magic. We will thus not allow it too frequently. Beast Transformation although not exactly shapeshifting, seems to be used by just two people: Mira and her younger brother, like a family line technique. Keep this in mind when you wish to create something like a werewolf, etc.
4.) Psychokinesis is just too powerful, because of all those options it can have and will in most cases be forbidden.
5.) Because of the series, playing more in a western/medi-eval style, although shotguns have been seen, is it better to not put in high tech weapons. So no laserguns or autocannons please. You will see at best some rapid fire weapons, directly firing magic bullets and faster action dry the user out very fast.
6.) There are already ancients in the series, with old powerful magic and flying fortresses, so do not develop another powerful race, with magic that is changing the entire world of Fairy Tail, please.
7.) Not all missions will involve mages, but is it still a forum with lots of mages. Most of things are based on magic and although there is a chance that one person might have good chances against one kind of element, is it not fine to have a general immunity to magic. Hence NO general magic immunity or turning the character into a walking fortress.
